This report presents the results of the 2009 policy supporting research on international ecological networks development within the framework of the Policy Support Research Program of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality. The research identifies priority eco-regions worldwide where the Netherlands can concentrate its efforts in eco-regional development and ecological networks initiatives, considering the ecological, economic and institutional factors. A three steps assessment approach is presented for selection of countries and their prioritization, including a multiple criteria analysis. A short list of seventeen countries in Africa important for the Dutch development relations in the field of eco-regional development has been identified. The indicative prioritization shows that South Africa, Ghana, Benin, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Senegal and Egypt are the first ten countries to be considered as high priority for both ecological and economic relations. The prioritization has been as well made for selected individual economic and ecological criteria, illustrating importance of the selected countries for these specific criteria. Based on the results of the assessment and the countries’ prioritization number of recommendations and follow up initiatives are proposed for enhancing the eco-regional developments in Africa and ecological networks initiatives. The selection has been done to establish a list of countries in which ecological fragmentation and connectivity are important issues.
